iButton is the most widely used driver identification device in-vehicle telematics. This is a rugged and durable device constructed of stainless steel to withstand harsh working environments. Even if you drop it or step on it, it does not get damaged.

iButton® is a registered trademark of Maxim Integrated Products Inc. So is the 1-Wire protocol through which the iButton connects to a tracking device.

An iButton consists of a computer chip enclosed in a 16mm thick stainless steel can. Since it is small and portable, it usually comes attached to a key fob or ring which is easy for the drivers to carry to their work. Each iButton device has a unique address on its chip.

The iButton reader is equally small and durable. It can be easily attached to the dashboard of vehicles.

There are two types of iButtons, magnetic and non-magnetic. Non-magnetic iButtons are inexpensive but not very reliable. Magnetic iButtons are more expensive, but since they stick to the readers and continuously transmit the data, they are more suitable for generating reliable driver timesheets.

In addition to identifying the driver, iButton can also immobilize a vehicle if the driver is not authorized to drive that vehicle, provided the tracker is configured accordingly.
